Dakota County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population was 355,904. Its county seat is Hastings. It is part of the Seven County Metro Area of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Dakota County, Apple Valley, Eagan, Rosemount and Independent School District 196 have partnered to enhance opportunities for residents to live more active lives. The goal is to help people increase routine activity each day by reducing barriers and enhancing resources in the environment, for example, improving sidewalks and trails, altering land use patterns, and shifting community focus from automobiles to people.
The challenge is not how to remake every community into a downtown, but how to tailor improvements specific to each community that will fit within existing conditions and help people make more healthful choices. Crosswalks in the right places, trail connections, walk-to-school programs and more neighborhood commercial areas are options for improving active living in our suburban context.
